können, müssen, möchten
können, müssen, möchten
Use modal verbs to talk about ability, necessity, and polite wishes.
A modal verb changes the meaning of a second verb: können expresses ability, müssen necessity, and möchten a polite wish. The second verb goes to the end in the infinitive.

Conjugated modal in position two + infinitive at the end: Ich kann Deutsch lernen. Wir müssen jetzt gehen.
Use these patterns to ask for help, explain obligations, request food or drink, and ask permission.
Do not use “sein” before an infinitive here. Say “Ich muss arbeiten,” not “Ich bin arbeiten.”
Modal near the front, action at the end: Ich muss heute arbeiten.
Make one sentence each with kann, muss, and möchte, then turn one into a question.
