Getting around
Unterwegs
Talk about bus and train travel, times, delays, tickets, and changing services.
Use mit dem Bus or mit dem Zug to say how you travel. Um introduces a departure or arrival time. Verspätung means delay, umsteigen means change services, and Eine Fahrkarte, bitte. is a simple ticket request.
Ich fahre mit dem Bus.
I travel by bus.
Ich fahre mit dem Zug.
I travel by train.
Der Bus kommt um acht Uhr.
The bus comes at eight.
Der Zug hat Verspätung.
The train is delayed.
Welche Linie fährt zum Bahnhof?
Which line goes to the station?
Ich muss umsteigen.
I have to change.
Eine Fahrkarte, bitte.
One ticket, please.
Wann fährt der nächste Bus?
When does the next bus leave?
Separate method, schedule, and problem: mit dem Bus, um acht Uhr, hat Verspätung. Use a direct question for the line or next departure.
Use this language at stops, stations, ticket counters, and during disrupted journeys.
Do not use zu dem Bus when you mean by bus. Say mit dem Bus. Zu dem Bus means toward the bus and changes the meaning.
Remember: mit dem for transport, um for time, muss … umsteigen for a required change.
Plan a journey with one ticket, a departure time, and one change of train or bus.
