Asking for directions

Nach dem Weg fragen

Ask where a place is, understand simple directions, and thank someone for helping.

Ask Wo ist der Bahnhof? for one place. The answer can give movement—Gehen Sie geradeaus, dann links—or a position: an der Ampel, neben der Apotheke, gegenüber dem Supermarkt. Links means left, rechts means right, and geradeaus means straight ahead. Gehen Sie is a polite instruction to one person or a formal group; it does not mean the speaker is going. In Wo ist der Bahnhof?, Bahnhof is singular, so use ist, not sind.

Wo ist der Bahnhof?

Where is the train station?

Gehen Sie geradeaus.

Go straight ahead.

Dann links.

Then left.

Dann rechts.

Then right.

An der Ampel.

At the traffic light.

Neben der Apotheke.

Next to the pharmacy.

Gegenüber dem Supermarkt.

Opposite the supermarket.

Vielen Dank für Ihre Hilfe.

Thank you very much for your help.

First identify whether the phrase asks for a place, tells someone to move, or describes a position. Then follow the sequence words such as dann.

Use these phrases to find a station, pharmacy, doctor’s office, public authority, or another destination.

Do not confuse links and rechts. Also keep singular ist in Wo ist der Bahnhof?

geradeaus = straight ahead; links = left; rechts = right; neben = next to; gegenüber = opposite.

Give a three-step fictional route using geradeaus, dann links/rechts, and one position phrase.
