Opposite and between

gegenüber und zwischen

Describe familiar places as opposite, between houses or nearby, using a clear reference point.

Gegenüber means opposite. It can stand alone when the reference point is understood, or name it: gegenüber dem Bahnhof. Zwischen den Häusern describes a location between houses. Ganz in der Nähe is a short answer meaning very nearby. Do not confuse opposite with between, or assume nearby gives an exact distance.

Die Apotheke ist gegenüber.

The pharmacy is opposite.

Die Bank ist gegenüber dem Bahnhof.

The bank is opposite the station.

Der Laden ist zwischen den Häusern.

The shop is between the houses.

Ganz in der Nähe.

Very nearby.

Use ist with one pharmacy, bank or shop. Learn gegenüber dem Bahnhof and zwischen den Häusern as location groups. Here the location forms are dative; do not infer that zwischen always uses the same form in every sentence.

A listener needs to know what a place is opposite. On a shared map, Die Apotheke ist gegenüber can refer to the place you are pointing at. The bank sentence explicitly supplies the station as its reference point.

Do not use sind with singular die Apotheke. Keep the umlaut and final -n in Häusern in this model. Do not reject Ganz in der Nähe merely because it is a short answer without a verb.

Opposite: gegenüber. Between: zwischen. Nearby: in der Nähe. Point to the reference places before choosing the expression.

Use the fictional map to ask and answer about one place at a time. Make the reference point clear and use only the locations taught here. Do not turn a location statement into unfamiliar route instructions.
