Order a drink, say what you eat or drink, express hunger or thirst, and ask for the bill.

Use Ich möchte … for a polite request and bitte in a short order: Ein Wasser, bitte. German says Ich habe Hunger and Ich habe Durst, literally “I have hunger/thirst.”

Ich möchte einen Kaffee.

I would like a coffee.

Ein Wasser, bitte.

A water, please.

Ich trinke Tee.

I drink tea.

Ich esse Reis.

I eat rice.

Ich habe Hunger.

I am hungry.

Ich habe Durst.

I am thirsty.

Das schmeckt gut.

That tastes good.

Die Rechnung, bitte.

The bill, please.

Say Ich möchte einen Kaffee. or a short order such as Ein Wasser, bitte. Learn the item with its article.

Use these phrases in a café, restaurant, bakery, or canteen.

Do not translate “I am hungry” with sein. Say Ich habe Hunger, and use bitte when ordering.

Remember: Ich möchte … · …, bitte. · Die Rechnung, bitte.
