Verb in second position (V2)

In a German main statement, the conjugated verb is in position two. Position one can be the subject, a time phrase or another single unit.

Count sentence units, not individual words. Am Montag is one unit in position one.

If the subject is first: Ich lerne heute Deutsch.

If time is first, the verb stays second and the subject follows: Heute lerne ich Deutsch.

A separable prefix may still appear at the end: Morgen stehe ich früh auf.
