ein / eine — the indefinite article

ein and eine introduce one person or thing that is not yet specific or already known.

In the nominative singular, use ein with masculine and neuter nouns and eine with feminine nouns.

That gives ein Mann, eine Frau and ein Kind. The form follows the noun’s gender.

There is no indefinite article in the plural: Freunde kommen. The accusative form einen is taught in a later topic.

Ein Mann wartet.

Eine Frau arbeitet.

Ein Kind spielt.

Hier ist eine Fahrkarte.
